ANKARAGUCU – ALMOST THERE !!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Apologies for the brevity of my report, but we were subjected to TRT flipping between matches last night and so it was difficult to focus on the Ankaragucu match.     Also, there  was Spring Cleaning underway in The Bira Park which was a distraction.     So,  if I have missed any important phases of the match then please put the details in the comments section.

It has to be said that it is always difficult to bounce straight back into the top league after relegation, but Ankaragucu is a whisker away from achieving just that.

Only one point is required from Ankaragucu’s last 3 matches to confirm promotion.    However, which team will be promoted as Champions is still up for grabs between Ankaragucu and Umraniye.    Which team can hold their nerve and win their final matches will be the key !!

Last night Ankaragucu did the biz by winning 3 points in Balikesir, but I’m sure the Coach (and us supporters !!) were hoping for more goals to boost the goal difference and try to move clear of Umraniye.     However, I suppose we have to be content for the time being and hope that more goals will come in the last 3 matches.

Balikesir             0                     ANKARAGUCU              2

Team – Bahadir, Erdem, Yusuf, Alperen, Yasin, Abdullah, Sahverdi, Aatif, Geraldo, Ariyibi and Owusu

Substitutes – Ali Kaan, Eren, Ishak, Cem and Murat

I have to say that last night Balikesir didn’t play like a team propping up the league and assured of relegation.    They certainly made Ankaragucu work for their 3 points   !!

It was a defensive blunder inside the box in the 13th minute which gave Ankaragucu the first goal and settled the nerves.    The Balikesir goalkeeper came rushing out to the edge of the box to collect the ball but misjudged his angles and Owusu was there first to guide the ball into the empty goal.

From the re-start, Balikesir made a fast break and Bahadir had to save a goal bound shot with his leg.

Again, near the half hour mark, a Balikesir attacker sent in a shot which looked like a goal all the way, but it went narrowly past the post.

We had to wait until the 70th minute for Ankaragucu to put the match to bed and calm our frayed nerves.    A break on the left by Yasin who cut-in to the goal line on the left and made what looked like a cut-back, but the ball sneaked inside the left post between the post and the goalkeeper’s legs.     A goal is a goal, and we take it gratefully !!!

Ankaragucu will be at home next Sunday 1st May when mid-table Samsun will be the visitors.    Also, on the same day and KO time, Umraniye will be at home against Balikesir.       We will be hoping that Balikesir puts up similar stiff resistance to last night’s performance and can perhaps snatch a goal or two  !!!

GENCLERBIRLIGI DEFY THE ODDS !!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Gencler turned the form book upside-down today to win 3 vital points against the 3rd top team in the league in their quest to avoid relegation.

This result will go a long way to ensuring that they move out of the danger area.

If they can continue to play with the fire and passion that they showed today then they will surely move into a safe mid-table position.     5 points clear of the 4th bottom team is a start   !!

GENCLERBIRLIGI           2                 Bandirma              0

Team – Ramazan, Omurcan, Metehan, Gokhan, Muhammed, Tshibola, Hrechyshkin, Baris, Sallallich, Musa and Lima

Substitutes – Aksel, Ilker, Altiparmak and Serdarcan

It took until the 20th minute for the first serious attempt on goal when Keny received the ball inside the 6 yard box and his shot was well saved by Ramazan.

12 minutes later and in Gencler’s first serious attack of the match they opened the scoring from a corner, which was needlessly conceded by the Bandirma goalkeeper, Gokhan, when he mis-kicked a clearance when it was easier to head the ball to a defender in his vicinity.    The corner was sent into the box and Metehan was able to loop a volley inside the right post.

Bandirma had 65% possession which was concentrated in their own half and midfield with the Gencler players harrying them continuously and forcing Bandirma into errors.    So, to be honest, Gencler was good value for their 1st half lead when they took their one chance well  !

Gencler came out for the 2nd half all fired up and obviously encouraged by going in 1-0 up at half time.     Sallallich had two good chances to increase their lead, and from the 2nd in the 74th minute they found the 2nd goal.

Sallallich’s shot inside the box was deflected for a corner, and from the resultant corner, Lima sent in a bullet of a header inside the left post with Gokhan static on his line in the centre.

So, a well deserved win by Gencler with Bandirma unable to threaten in the 2nd half.

More of the same will be required on Friday when Gencler travel to relegation threatened Denizli.

As always, watch this space for the outcome.

ANKARAGUCU SHOOT THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT !!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Last night Ankaragucu was a pale shadow of the team who have led the league for most of the season.    They bottled-out, and in the process, handed the onus back to Umraniye and Bandirma to try and secure the top 2 spots in the league in the run-in.

It was a pathetic error strewn performance by Ankaragucu who scorned numerous chances to at least secure one point.    However, it must be said that on the balance of play, Altinordu took their chances well, and in the end, fully deserved all 3 points.

There is a way back for Ankaragucu, but it must happen on Sunday when they play bottom team Balikesir and they must play an all-out attacking formation.    With Owusu and Zahid suspended for this match, it will be a test for Mustafa Bey and the team to put the show back on the road.

Ankaragucu has been in the play-offs position before in the past, and it is no exaggeration to say that this route to the Super League is a ‘lottery’, and to be avoided at all costs  !!

ANKARAGUCU           2                      Altinordu                3

Team – Akin, Yasin, Yusuf, Sinan, Murat, Sahverdi, Abdullah, Zahid, Aatif, Geraldo and Cem

Substitutes – Eren, Ali Kaan, Ariyibi, Babacan and Pinto

It only took Altinordu 8 minutes to open the scoring with their first attack of the match.    Seref received the ball on the left and cut into the box sharply taking out two Ankaragucu defenders in the process.   He then fired a shot inside the left post with Akin unable to stop it, despite being well placed to do so.    (Damon mentioned that Akin may have slipped on the rough goal area surface when the shot was made  ?!).

Geraldo had another good match and was unlucky 5 minutes later when, after some tricky footwork on the right, his cross received no takers.

Then 4 minutes before the break came the ‘howler’ which gifted Altinordu their 2nd goal.   A fast break on the right by Altinordu looked harmless when only Yener was following up front together with 5 Ankaragucu defenders.    The cross came over into the box and straight to Yusuf who passed direct to Yener instead of leaving the ball to the defender behind him, or passing to Akin.     Yener said ........... thank you very much ......... and slotted in easily for a calamity of a goal.

2 minutes later we were smiling again when a clearance from defence was played out to Geraldo just outside the box.    He took aim and sent his shot through a ruck of players and inside the right post for his first goal for Ankaragucu, and here’s hoping it won’t be his last   !!

Everything to play for in the 2nd half, or so we thought   !!!

10 minutes into the 2nd half and another instance of indiscipline by Ankaragucu when Zahid was given a straight RED card for saying something ‘naughty’ to the referee during a questionable penalty appeal by the Ankaragucu players.

2 minutes later and Altinordu extended their lead when they carved open the Ankaragucu defence in a fluid move which culminated in Seref firing in to the top left to give Akin no chance.

5 minutes later and it was Altinordu’s turn to receive a RED card after Kubilay received a 2nd yellow for a bad foul just outside the box.

This was the ‘rallying call’ for Ankaragucu to press forward and Ariyibi had a great chance 3 minutes later, but blasted the ball over when it was easier to score   !

With 20 minutes to go, Ankaragucu’s attacks finally paid off when they were awarded a penalty when Geraldo was brought down in the box as he was about to make a pass.   Eren stepped up and sent a weak shot straight at the goalkeeper to spurn a glorious chance to stage an unlikely come-back.

However, the 2nd goal did come in the 90th minute when Ariyibi scored in a crowded box, ........ but .......... too little ........... too late   !!

So, as I said earlier, it puts Sunday’s match into the category of ........... Really, Really, Must Win   !!!     Balikesir’s position in the league is irrelevant because they will ‘smell blood’ and try to cause an upset   !

This match will therefore test the mettle of Ankaragucu.

Bring it on !!!

GENCLERBIRLIGI – STILL FLIRTING WITH THE RELEGATION ZONE !!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

After tonight’s match in Bursa, Gencler remain in the bottom half of the league with a clutch of other teams trying to move into mid-table security, and with not long to go till the end of the season, they are leaving it late to escape the inevitable dog-fight in the last few weeks of the season  !!

Gencler is only 3 points above 4th bottom Kocaeli and some of the teams below Gencler have a game in hand   !!

Bursaspor           0                       GENCLERBIRLIGI         0

Team – Ramazan, Muhammed, Gokhan, Metehan, Omurcan, Hrechyshkin,, Tshibola, Musa, Aksel, Baris and Eleke

Substitutes – Berisbek, Ilker, Sallallich and Altiparmak

There was only one instance of serious action in the 1st half, and had it not been for Ramazan, Bursa would have secured all 3 points.     In the 17th minute a corner was sent into the box and a goal bound header was headed into the top right corner until Ramazan acrobatically palmed the ball out straight to a Bursa attacker whose shot hit the post and was cleared.

It was a bad tempered match with one RED card and 6 YELLOW cards, and in all honesty the referee could have given more after all the dissent he received from the players, especially Gencler players.

I lost count of the cross balls into the box by Bursa in the 2nd half which were all swallowed-up by the defence and Ramazan.     Bursa’s play was desperate at times and that was probably to be expected as they sit uncomfortably in 2nd bottom position in the league.

Bursa had 71% of the possession tonight and only 2 shots on target, so I suppose Gencler can say that they deserved to leave Bursa with one point  !!

Berisbek of Gencler was the player who received a 2nd yellow and then a RED card in the 90th minute for deliberate handball when attacking the Bursa defence.

Gencler have another tough match on Saturday when they host 3rd top of the league Bandirma  who are obviously eying 2nd top and automatic promotion.     Therefore, Bandirma will be coming to Ankara to attack.

As always, watch this space for the outcome.

ANKARAGUCU – THE PHOENIX IS RISING !!!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

(Headline courtesy of Battle Damaged Kanka Damon)

Ankaragucu made a clear statement of intent last night with a crucial victory to go 6 points clear at the top of the league.    Well, at least until 2nd top Umraniye play Keciorengucu tomorrow afternoon.

Ankaragucu’s fate is now firmly in their own hands and know that, with only five matches remaining, they must keep the momentum going and frustrate the chasing pack who are all vying for promotion and a play-off position.

Last night was also an auspicious occasion with some of us visiting the Stadium for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.

Also, it was the first chance we had of meeting our new kanka who recently arrived in Ankara from Spain.    Welcome to the Kanka Group Antonio, Cadiz Kanka, and there is no mistaking him as he is even taller than the Ankaragucu centre back, Sinan   !!

Also, in attendance last night was Maniac Kanka Harun, Battle Damaged Kanka Damon, Nurer Kanka, Horseman Kanka Osman and yours truly.

It was great to be back in the Stadium and the atmosphere was ‘carnival’ with hundreds of large Ankaragucu flags in all the tribunes.     The noise factor was also high with Gecikondu leading as usual  !!

ANKARAGUCU            2                          Adanaspor         0

Team – Akin, Yusuf, Sinan, Abdullah, Yasin, Sahverdi, Zahid, Cem, Murat, Geraldo and Aatif

Substitutes – Ariyibi, Eren, Ali Kaan, Ishak and Atakan

The opening exchanges were mostly all about wave after wave of Ankaragucu attacks and Yasin almost opened the scoring after 6 minutes when he was put through on the left, but his shot was into the side netting.

Approaching the half hour mark and Ankaragucu had two good chances to find the opening goal.   Firstly, after good work by Geraldo, he sent in an inviting cross but it was missed by attackers and defenders.   Then in a goal mouth melee there was a shot which went well wide of the mark !

However, the goal eventually arrived on the half hour mark from Geraldo again who sent in an inviting cross on the right for Cem to knock in for a well deserved goal.

Adana was not going down without a fight and they almost equalised a few minutes later when a long range goal bound shot was acrobatically saved by Akin for a corner.

Into the 2nd half and Adana almost grabbed the equaliser 7 minutes in when a long range shot hit the bar and was cleared.

6 minutes later and the crucial 2nd goal arrived after some great build-up play by Ankaragucu.   The final through ball was played to Zahid in the centre of the box.     He quickly looked up, took aim and fired a bullet of a shot inside the right post.

15 minutes to go and Geraldo almost scored the 3rd after a defensive error gifted him the ball, but his shot was deflected out for a corner.

Then in the last action of the match, Eren screwed his shot wide when he was presented with an open goal after another defensive error.

Ankaragucu has the chance to heap more misery on the chasing pack on Wednesday afternoon when they entertain relegation threatened Altinordu at the Eryaman Stadium.   Due to business interests, we will be unable to go to the stadium, but we will watch the match in The Bira Park Bar.

A great team effort last night, and well done Ankaragucu   !!!

As always, watch this space for details of our next match.

GENCLERBIRLIGI - ONE STEP FORWARD ........ONE STEP BACK !!!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Gencler was a big disappointment yesterday after an impressive win last week in the ‘mini Ankara Derby’.

They were blown away by a 1st half blitz by a slick Tuzla team who punished Gencler’s defensive frailties with 4 well taken goals.

As is sometimes the case in a high scoring 1st half match, the 2nd half was ‘a damp squib’, and despite a more determined display by Gencler, they couldn’t find the goal to stage an unlikely fight-back.

Consequently, Gencler slip back into the danger area and are only 3 points above the relegation zone.

Tuzla                 4                         GENCLERBIRLIGI        0

Team – Ramazan, Gokhan, Metehan, Arda, Berisbek, Aksel, Hrechyshkin, Muhammed, Sallallich, Baris and Lima

Substitutes – Omurcan, Tshibola, Musa, Eleke and Serdarcan

Tuzla was straight into attacking mode from the kick-off and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 17th minute.   A through ball was played to the speedy and quick thinking   Ahmet just outside the box and he lobbed the ball over Ramazan who had strayed too far out of his goal area.

3 minutes later and it was 2 after some poor defending by Gencler, especially from Gokhan who gifted the ball to Ezeh in his attempted clearance.   Ezeh shot and the ball went in off the inside of the opposite post.

15 minutes later, Tuzla scored again, but it was ruled offside.    From the replay, I have to say it was a borderline decision, but without VAR it was difficult to assess with conviction.

Approaching half time and Gencler’s only serious attempt on goal was a long range shot by Baris which hit the post and was cleared.

The Gencler defence again shot themselves in the foot 4 minutes before half time when they were all at sea to allow Ezeh to cut the ball back from the goal line for Lamine to slot-in for possibly the easiest goal he will ever score  !

Tuzla was not content to run the clock down to the half time whistle, and their continued attacking play bore fruit in time added on when the Gencler defence backed off Ezeh as he drove into the box.    Ezeh was allowed to shoot and he made no mistake with Ramazan well beaten.

The 2nd half   ???      No comment   !!!

Gencler will be in action again on Tuesday 19th April when they travel to Bursa.

Balikesir look doomed to be relegated, but 2nd bottom Bursa can still avoid the drop with only 4 points separating them from safety.    So, it will be a real test of both teams resolve on Tuesday.

Another difficult match looms for Gencler next Saturday when they host 3rd top Bandirma who are only 2 points behind Umraniye and 5 points behind Ankaragucu.

As I’ve said many times here ............... it doesn’t get any easier in this league  !!

As always, watch this space for the outcome of both matches.

GENCLERBIRLIGI IN DETERMINED MOOD TO AVOID THE DROP !!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Genclerbirligi deservedly secured 3 valuable points last night in the ‘mini Ankara Derby’ to move 5 points clear of the relegation zone and into 11th position in the league.

GENCLERBIRLIGI          2                  Keciorengucu          0

Team – Ramazan, Musa, Arda, Gokhan, Muhammed, Aksel, Hrechyskin, Berisbek, Baris, Lima and Sallallich

Substitutes – Ilker, Serdarcan and Altiparmak

Gencler sent out an attacking formation and almost opened the scoring in the 6th minute when Sallallich hit the post with his fierce shot.

However, Kecioren looked dangerous on the break and almost found the opening goal when Eze took a pass on his chest inside the box and sent his half volley just past the post.

The Kecioren goalkeeper was in inspired form when he saved Gencler opening the scoring near the half time whistle by first saving a point blank shot from Baris inside the 6 yard box, and then saving bravely from Lima.

The 2nd half was only 4 minutes old when Gencler found the opener which their play had suggested.   A through ball was played to Lima, but his shot was blocked and parried by the goalkeeper, and Baris following up had the easiest of tasks by slotting the ball in.

8 minutes later Ramazan pulled off an excellent save from a bullet of a goal bound shot just outside the box.

10 minutes later and Lima missed a sitter when he shot straight at the goalkeeper.    However, he made amends 10 minutes later when he volleyed in from a cross on the right to put a more realistic complexion on the score line.

Gencler travel to take on Tuzla next Friday.     Tuzla is only 3 points behind Gencler, and with their game in hand, travel to play Denizlispor today.     Yet another crucial match for Gencler to negotiate against another relegation threatened team.

As always, watch this space for the outcome.

ANKARAGUCU REFUSE TO RELINQUISH TOP SPOT !!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Ankaragucu’s fighting spirit was put to the test yesterday in Istanbul against the 2nd top team who have been chasing Ankaragucu for most of the season.

Reduced to 10 men just before half time, it seemed that Ankaragucu would implode when Umraniye took the lead just after the break.   However, Ankaragucu staged a remarkable fight-back in the 2nd half to deservedly find the equaliser.

Umraniye             2                      ANKARAGUCU           2

Team – Akin, Yasin, Sinan, Yusuf, Erdem, Ishak, Abdullah, Owusu, Zahid, Murat and Aatif

Substitutes – Ali Kaan, Geraldo, Sahverdi, Ariyibi and Cem

The kankas, Battle Damaged Kanka Damon, Maniac Kanka Harun, Kaleci Kanka Tansu and I met-up in The Bira Park Bar full of optimism, but our faith in the team was put to the test after a match of ups and downs !

It was a great start by Ankaragucu when they took the lead after 9 minutes.   A corner on the right was cleared to just outside the box and the ball played back to near the right goal line for Owusu to pass to Aatif who fired in at the near post from an acute angle.

Umraniye was still attacking and 5 minutes later it was Akin to the rescue as he tipped a goal bound header over the bar.

However, Akin was responsible for conceding the equaliser on the half hour mark when he rushed out down the right goal line to recover the ball which Yacine was chasing, but he was a second behind, and when Yacine turned him, he crossed at a very acute angle to curl the ball in with the defender on the line unable to stop the ball hitting the back of the net.

Approaching half time and Owusu was unlucky to receive a 2nd yellow card (the first having been given only a few minutes before) for a clumsy tackle (certainly not malicious  !!) and off he went to leave Ankaragucu with a mountain to climb in the 2nd half   !

Ankaragucu almost surprised us 5 minutes into the 2nd half when Murat scorned a great chance after a defensive error.   One on one with the goalkeeper, he shot direct at the goalkeeper and the chance was lost.

2 minutes later and chaos in the Ankaragucu penalty area when an attacker was scythed down in the box and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.    Antonio side-footed the penalty inside the left post with Akin diving in the opposite direction.

Lots of glum faces in The Bira Park with optimism gradually draining away   !!

Half way through the 2nd half and Ankaragucu was gradually taking control of the match, notwithstanding that they were ‘the gallant 10 men’, and putting Umraniye under pressure as they sought  the equaliser.

Geraldo almost scored with a shot from just outside the box, but it was well saved.   Then, 8 minutes later the goalkeeper made another acrobatic save from a Sinan header.    5 minutes later it was Geraldo who set-up Ariyibi for a shot which was well saved again.

However, the equaliser eventually came with 8 minutes of the match remaining and it was a goal worthy of winning any match.    Murat took the throw-in on the right touch line, which was played to Ariyibi who took the ball past a defender to the right goal line and sent a perfect cut-back to Yasin on the left who stroked the ball in with the goalkeeper helpless.    An excellent and well constructed goal   !!

High praise for the Ankaragucu team for their 2nd half efforts, and a special mention here for Geraldo who probably had his best match for Ankaragucu with his impressive workrate.

Ankaragucu therefore retain their top spot in the league with a 3 points advantage over Umraniye, but the chasing pack are still closing with Bandirma only 2 points behind Umraniye and Eyup,  Istanbulspor and Erzurum not far behind.

Ankaragucu will be at home next Sunday against mid-table Adanaspor, so no let-up in the pressure with the run-in starting now.

As always, watch this space for the outcome.

ANKARAGUCU’s TITLE ASPIRATIONS ON HOLD ........FOR NOW !!!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Ankaragucu spurned the opportunity of moving 6 points clear at the top of the league last night, but still remain in top position, but only 3 points ahead of Umraniye with the chasing pack of Bandirma, Eyup, Istanbulspor and Erzurum closing in with an eye on promotion to the Super League.

Ankaragucu was defeated last night by their defensive frailties in the 1st half when they failed to deal with the pace of the Eyup attackers.    That is no criticism of Ankaragucu’s endeavours, but the bottom line is that for all their attacking play they were not clinical enough against an impressive Eyup team.

However, with their never say die attitude, there is still cause for optimism, but Ankaragucu needs to translate that into 3 points next Saturday  !!

ANKARAGUCU         2                      Eyupspor           3

Team –Akin, Erdem, Yusuf, Sinan, Yasin, Ishak, Abdullah, Aatif, Zahid, Ariyibi and Owusu

Substitutes-  Eren, Murat, Geraldo and Hasan

Eyup was first out the traps and had Ankaragucu on the back foot in the early stages of the match.     They almost opened the scoring after only 2 minutes when Sinan was caught dithering in the box and was disposed by 2 attackers.    The shot was parried by Akin and a defender was in the right place to sweep up and send the ball out for a corner.

It only took another 12 minutes for Eyup to open the scoring with a sweeping move started in their own half from a throw in.    The long ball was played forward to Rodrigues who outpaced 2 defenders and sent in a fierce shot for a classic goal.

7 minutes later and it was two when danger man Rodrigues outpaced defenders on the left wing and sent in an inch perfect cross for Ogulcan to bullet a header in with the defence again a split second behind to pick him up.

Some teams would have crumbled at this point, but to Ankaragucu’s credit they continued to press forward and their heads didn’t go down.

6 minutes later and Ankaragucu was back in the match with a controversial goal.    A free kick on the left was swung over and headed in by Sinan, but the ball went through a hole in the net.    The referee initially gave a goal kick, but after protests by the Ankaragucu players and after the 4th official had spoken to the referee the goal was given.     The ground staff and one of the linesmen will have a ‘smack on the wrist’ today  !!!

The equaliser came 5 minutes before half time and was a goal worthy of winning any match and well crafted by Aatif and Owusu.    Aatif played an accurate cut-back on the right to Owusu who avoided 2 tackles and sent his shot inside the left post with perhaps a slight deflection on the way in.

An impressive fight back by Ankaragucu to go in all square at half time  !!

We were full of expectation of Ankaragucu winning this match at this stage, but only 2 minutes into the 2nd half and Eyup scored the winner.    A free kick on the left was sent into the box and Ogulcan was there first to flick the ball inside the right post.    There was a suspicion of offside, but .......... without VAR the goal stood.

To their credit, Ankaragucu pressed forward to find the equaliser again and they almost did when Owusu scuffed a shot when in a good position and the ball was retrieved by the goalkeeper.     Aatif hit the bar with a shot near the end, but Eyup held on and saw the match out.

Disappointing ........... yes, but as I said earlier, Ankaragucu is still on top of the league with another crucial match coming up next Saturday.     Ankaragucu travel to take on 2nd top Umraniye in a match which could very well have a major bearing on which team ends up as Champions and which team has to settle for runners-up.

This match will be the acid test of Ankaragucu’s season, so as always, watch this space for the outcome and the details.
