HIBERNIAN LADIES RETURN TO THE FRAY

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

After an 8 weeks lay-off due to the Winter shut-down and bad weather, the Scottish Premier League (Ladies League) resumed last weekend.

After suffering defeat in their last match 8 weeks ago in the League Cup Final to Edinburgh Ladies, the Hibs players were in determined mood to retain their league title.

They were playing Raith Rovers Ladies at the weekend at home and got off to a perfect start in the 1st half when McBride opened the scoring. Only some super saves from the Rovers goalkeeper kept the score down.

Into the 2nd half and Hibs Ladies continued to dominate with the Rover keeper denying the Hibs strikers. However, it was only a matter of time before the Hibs pressure told and they added 3 more goals through Grant (2) and Little.

Hibs Ladies are now top of the League, but only on goal difference from Glasgow City. So, still all to play for in this competition.

More updates to follow as the season progresses.

ANKARAGUCU - THE EXODUS TO TRABZON CONTINUES

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Maniac Kanka mentioned in the comments section of a recent Post that Ceyhun Eris was leaving ANKARAGUCU for Trabzon and Murat Ocak coming in the opposite direction for a fee in ANKARAGUCU’s favour of about 500 Million Euros.

A sad day indeed when a player of his calibre (and the club captain) leaves half way through the season, and this is sure to provoke re-newed supporter protests against Club President Cemal Aydin.

I find this hard to take and am not altogether satisfied at the way Trabzon seem to come to ANKARAGUCU and plunder our best players at will. Not long ago we had the loss of top goalscorer Augustine to contend with, followed by our excellent midfielder Adem, and then last summer, Eski Kanka’s fav player, Umut Bulut.

To say I’m angry is an under-statement, and while I have been uneasy about criticising Cemal Aydin in the past, you can be sure that I will be joining the protests which are sure to follow shortly.

We should not forget either that Trabzon recently swooped for Gencler’s Risp and Ayhan, so they are not `flavour of the month` in Ankara to put it mildly !!!

Guess who will be supporting Antep when they play Trabzon in the Cup tonight ??!!

Uphill climb left for Genclerbirligi

As you may know my computer crashed a week or so ago and I couldn't sort it out despite getting a new hard drive installed. For this reason I invited computer genius Flying Dutchman Carlo over to my place to help me out and it just so happened that a footy game was on the TV as well. While Carlo did his magic, Genclerbirligi couldn't, going down to Fenerbahce in an empty stadium away from home in the first leg of the Turkish Cup quarter finals.

Fenerbahce 2 - Genclerbirligi 1

Genclerbirligi started off well enough controlling the ball but as usual never really finding a chance for a shot on goal. Fener had the first real chance of the match and then Gencler had one or two. It was all midfield stuff and Gencler should really learn to keep the ball on the ground for those short passes.

There was one strange incident where Okan Ozturk was going up for a header somewhere in midfield. He got a slight whack in the head by a bum (that was not an insult but referred to the fact he got hit by a Fenerbahce player's bottom). He went down, it was impossible to stay up, and the referee blew his whistle within milliseconds for the medical people to come on, even though Okan was not even pretending to be hurt. What annoyed me was that Okan then decided to walk off with the medics and thus wasn't up front for the subsequent free kick. If you aren't injured Okan... stay on the bloody pitch.

Then came disaster in the last minute of the first half. Fener had a freekick. The ball is kicked, referee blows whistle, ball goes into back of net, Fener players rush the referee, ref gives Traore a yellow card, ref gives Fener a penalty, goal to Fener.

Anyone else notice how the above events are out of sequence. Flying Dutchman Kanka Carlo certainly did. If the referee thought the offence deserved a penalty he should have given it straight away, not after two minutes of shouting from the Fener players. No wonder in the Turkish game players complain to the ref so much... it works!

Leaving that aside there was no way that it should have been a penalty. Sure Traore was wrestling around with a Fener attacker who was also wrestling around with Traore. Six of one and half a dozen of the other.

Second half and Fenerbahce started bringing on some of the players they had been resting, namely Tuncay, David (or however he spells his name) and Kezman but it was Gencler who scored after a lovely pass across the goal at an angle found Mehmet Cakir who slotted it home.

1-1 at this stage and it seemed as if both teams were happy with the result as we got to see some pretty boring footy.

The Gencler defence had clearly gone to sleep when Fenerbahce wrapped it up in the last minute or so.

In what seemed like slow motion the ball was crossed into the box where neither Mehmet Nas nor the other defender (the bloke with a corn row-style haircut) were marking their man. The result, a simple header in which our keeper Jesus had no chance of getting to.

Time and again we saw why we shouldn't have sold Risp.

A mountain to climb for the return match in a few weeks time but we get to see it all again on Friday when it is Fenerbahce versus Genclerbirligi in the (Your Company's Name Here) Super Lig.

Back to Winning Ways for Hibs

NOt a classic, not even a very good game of football but a good three points for Hibs.

After being well beaten by Hibs twice already this season, Motherwell came to Easter Road determined not to lose goals. A packed defence and midfield certainly stopped any flowing football and along with a heavy pitch that cut up early it was an uphill battle for Hibs.

There was not much to report about the first half but Hibs changed their shape at half time and pushed a second striker up front. This helped Hibs hold the ball up and the chances soon started to come. Once the first goal was scored by Scott Brown it seemed as if more would follow but som poor finishing meant we had to wait till injury time for the clincher.

Hibs did deserve the three points but will have to play better to win the two cup games coming up on Wednesday and Saturday even if they are aginst lower league teams.

The bad news for Hibs is that Rangers look like they have signed Kevin Thomson. The news said £2M but I would be surprised if that was all Hibs would get.

Antalyaspor v ANKARAGUCU - AN EXCUSE FOR A KANKA GET-TOGETHER

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Some time ago, Oz Kanka and I discussed the possibility of having a Kanka get-together in the New Year. Unfortunately, due to one reason or another, the chance passed us by. However, the idea has not been put-to-bed.

More recently, Oz Kanka, Maniac Kanka and I discussed the possibility of having the long overdue get-together in the Spring in Antalya (I have already sent out an email on the subject).

The idea was originally the brain-child of Kirkcaldy Kanka Martyn before his departure to Ingallind last summer, and he indicated that he and Sinead wanted to drop-in and see their beloved ANKARAGUCU again. So, the idea was formulated to coincide with ANKARAGUCU's visit to Antalya in the Spring.

That idea is now gaining momentum and the wheels are now in motion to make the idea a reality !

We know the venue - Antalya. We now know the weekend - 12/13 May.

What we don't know is the exact day of the match, ie, Saturday or Sunday. We will not know this till nearer the time, but Maniac Kanka will give us a heads-up as soon as it is announced by the TFF.

Oz Kanka, Maniac Kanka and I will be co-ordinating the trip and we will be deciding on travel arrangements, hotel/pansion, etc in due course.

In the meantime, I would appreciate it if you could tell one of us if you are intending to join us on this special occasion (I have already received a `definite up-for-it` from Robbie, Judy and Suzan).

It goes without saying that we hope Martyn and Sinead can make it and I'm looking forward to them giving me a thumbs-up.

So, please contact Oz Kanka, Maniac Kanka or I by email, cep telephone, or on the Blog if you are planning to join us.

Look forward to hearing from you.

ANKARAGUCU, BURSASPOR AND...... ATATURK

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

As reported in Hurriyet, it was a long Sunday for the supporters of ANKARAGUCU and Bursaspor. They met at Tandogan yesterday morning at 9am and walked together to Anitkabir (Mausoleum) to show their respect for Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (founder of the Turkish Republic). It was also an opportunity to make a statement for peace, friendship and brotherhood. Fine sentiments indeed. It certainly makes a change from all the horror stories about footie hooliganism around the world ! This event was organised by our friends in ANKARAGUCU Pegasus Supporters Group.

Of course, the friendship between ANKARAGUCU and Bursaspor is legendary and events like this only serves to strengthen the ties between the two clubs and perhaps the idea might catch-on in other clubs in this country and other countries too.

Unfortunately, I couldn't attend this event nor the match, but perhaps Maniac Kanka Harun may wish to comment ? Therefore, acknowledgement is given to Hurriyet for this report.

First up, and surprise surprise, it was another draw !!!

ANKARAGUCU 1 Bursaspor 1

However, before the match kicked-off there was a one minute's silence to show respect for the Vice President of ANKARAGUCU (Serdar Tosun) who passed away last week.

The match was pretty much end to end in the first half but it was Bursa who threatened first. Sinan made an excellent run down the right wing and cut into the penalty area. Serkan commited himself but was beaten and it was left to an ANKARAGUCU defender to clear the ball off the goal line. Shortly after that Cumhur had a good opportunity to open the scoring for Bursa when Serkan made an excellent save from his ferocious free kick shot on goal.

In ANKARAGUCU's first `serious` attempt on goal, Bebbe scored on 35 minutes when he received a pass outside the penalty area and moved into the penalty area with the Bursa defence retreating. He let fly and ANKARAGUCU went in at half time one up.

The 2nd half was a carbon copy of the first half with both teams playing attacking footie but without any real finishing threat. Then, with only 7 minutes left on the clock, Bursa won a corner. De Souza played the corner into the box where it was met by Ismail and he gave Serkan no chance.

So, a draw it ended which will no doubt have pleased the clubs and supporters.

This result leaves ANKARAGUCU in 10th position in the league on 23 points. Gencler are in 6th position on 27 points. Top team Fener.....spit.....bahce are on 38 points and looking like they will be difficult to dislodge from the top spot.

Upcoming matches this week -

Tuesday 30 January - Turkish Cup Quarter Final 1st Leg - Fener v Gencler - KO 8pm
Friday 2 February - League - Fener v Gencler - KO not known yet
Sunday 4 February - League - Ankaraspor v ANKARAGUCU - KO not known yet

GENCLERBIRLIGI - MONEY COMES AND POINTS GO !!!

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

The Title above is a quote from Atilla Turker of the Hurriyet newspaper ! However, after yesterday's result an appropriate comment me thinks !!!

Genclerbirligi 0 Sivasspor 1

As most of you are aware, Gencler sold Risp and Ayman to Trabzon last week and this has drawn negative comment not only from the fans but now from the media.

As far as I'm aware, none of the kankas were at the match yesterday and so I am making this report from info in the Hurriyet. Our regular Gencler journalist was in Bolu flying down the mountain on his skis, hopefully not like Eddie the Eagle !!!

Back to the match and the 1st half was pretty much end to end stuff with lots of scoring opportunities falling to both teams but none taken until the half time whistle was about to sound. Then, due to some poor defending, Balili knocked the ball in for the winning goal.

Cakir had a great chance shortly before the opening goal after some good work by Engin, but he blasted the ball over when it would have been easier to score.

Into the 2nd half and again it was end to end stuff. However, Gencler had Gokhan to thank for making 2 great saves to keep the scoreline down.

In a post-match interview Mesut Bakkal was critical of his defence. Perhaps he should not have sold his best defender to Trabzon me thinks ??!! Once again Atilla Turker said that in his opinion Gencler would have been challenging for honours if Cavcav had kept the team together. Well said Mr Turker !!

Snow arrived in Ankara this morning but I'm sure the ANKARAGUCU v Bursa match will be played. Watch this space for details tomorrow.

Another Highland Humping for Hibs

Inverness 3-0 Hibernian

Not much good to say about this game (for Hibs at least), Inverness were 3-0 ahead by half time and by then there was no real way back. Hibs contributed to their own downfall with some woeful defending however we also have to accept that Inverness were by far the better team on the day.

The second half saw a better performance from Hibs but some of that may be down to Inverness protecting their lead and looking to catch Hibs on the break. 'A bad day at the office' was Jon Collins assessment and it is hard to argue.

Incredibly for a team that score so many (Lets not look at the goals against column) Hibs have never scored in Inverness.

The most annoying aspect of this result is that just as we were pushing the teams in second and third we let ourselves down. Still plenty of games to go though and two cups to compete in. On Saturday Hibs play Motherwell followed by the League cup semi final against St Johnstone and then the Scottish cup against Gretna.

Plenty to look forward to in the coming week.

Nordic Kanka training them nice and early

Nordic Kanka Stian has clearly being taking a lesson from my book. Train 'em young is my motto. Unfortunately I don't have the names of the little ones but you have to agree they are adorable.

Computer blows up

Sorry for no updates on the Gencler match from the other day but my computer blew up. It didn't quite blow up but it seems the hard drive crashed. Luckily I had backed up lots of photos and stuff but I may have lost quite a bit. Arrrrggggghhhhhhhh. Bloody technology.

ANKARAGUCU - TURKISH CUP EXIT

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Mixed fortunes from the Ankara Big Two last night which saw ANKARAGUCU eliminated from the Turkish Cup and Genclerbirligi progressing into the knock-out stage. Results -

Besiktas 2 ANKARAGUCU 1
Rizespor 0 Genclerbirligi 1

With Gencler, Besiktas and ANKARAGUCU all finishing on 9 points each, it was down to goal difference and that meant Gencler topping the group with plus 5 and Besiktas 2nd with plus 4. ANKARAGUCU were 3rd with plus 3.

So, a disappointing night which had started so promisingly with all the kankas looking forward to the two Ankara teams qualifying. Oz Kanka, Maniac Kanka, Flying Dutchman Kanka, Husso Kanka, Fatma Kankie and I were seated comfortably in The Cappadokia Bar in front of the big screen and lots of `refreshments` kept coming our way !

The first half was mostly all Besiktas pressure with some narrow escapes in front of goal thanks to some poor finishing by the Besiktas strikers. There was only one moment of danger in the 1st half for Besiktas when Aytekin hit the post when it looked easier to score.

Into the 2nd half and it was still Besiktas who were doing most of the attacking, although ANKARAGUCU were beginning to pick up the pace and come more into the game after they were posted missing in the 1st half. Ceyhun and Bebbe had a couple of near misses.

Then, in the 60th minute, against the run of play, ANKARAGUCU scored what we all assumed would be the winner. From a quickly taken corner, Ceyhun fed the ball across the Besiktas goalmouth and Bebbe had the easiest of tasks to side foot the ball into the net with the Besiktas defenders looking static. The roar from the Kankas was heard all the way to Guven Park !!

10 minutes later we were still celebrating when Besiktas was awarded a dubious penalty. The Besiktas forward was running with the ball to the right of Serkan’s goal and was looking like he was having trouble controlling the ball when Serkan decided to commit himself to gathering the ball. The Besiktas forward took a tumble and the referee pointed to the spot. I have to be honest and say I would NOT have given it !!!

Ricardinho stepped up and sent Serkan the wrong way. So it was 1-1, but still all to play for.

Then disaster !!! A few minutes after the penalty and some of the floodlights went out and the referee stopped the match. Mutterings of discontent all round and some of the kankas (who will remain nameless !!) were suggesting deliberate tampering with the floodlights so that Besiktas would know the result from Rize before their match was over !!!! It will be interesting to see if anything comes of it and if the TFF will instigate an investigation ??!!

After 15 minutes the `fault` was repaired and the match resumed. However, no sooner had the match started with another Besiktas breakaway than the ball was sent in by Delgado for the 2nd Besiktas goal. Despondency all round and we were left feeling cheated after ANKARAGUCU were looking like the better team as the 2nd half progressed.

To compound matters further, Yasin was sent off a few minutes from the end and ANKARAGUCU were left with a mountain to climb.

So, as I said, a very disappointing end to ANKARAGUCU’s cup run, which is particularly galling when one considers that they had led the group from the beginning.

All credit to Gencler though for winning the group. We should not forget their excellent 3-0 win against Besiktas which was probably the result of the tournament so far. I heard today (22 January) that Gencler are drawn against Fener….spit…bahce in the quarter finals. It goes without saying that we will ALL be supporting Gencler and looking forward to seeing them in the Cup Final.

Back to league business this coming weekend. Details later.

Double Celebration for Hibs

A good week for Hibs this week as first we won 2-0 away to Kilmarnock and then tonight beat Aberdeen 4-1 at Easter Road in the Scottish cup.

The win away to Kilmarnock was especially pleasing as Hibs started the game with five 19 year olds. At half time Hibs introduced a couple of more experienced players and that proved decisive as second half goals from Sproule and Fletcher secured the points.

The game finished on a sour note for Hibs as our top scorer Chris Killen snapped his Achiles and is now out for the rest of the season.

The game was not the best I have seen but to be fair to both teams the pitch was very heavy with water. Plenty effort was not matched by the cunning needed to open up the defences but once Hibs got infront they looked comfortable.

Tonights Scottish cup replay with Aberdeen was only tem minute old when Aberdeen broke from a susstained spell of pressure from Hibs and scored the opener. Their joy was short lived with Fletcher equalising three minutes later. The game then flowed back and forward for the rest of the half before Hibs got their noses in front bang on half time. With the whole Aberdeen defence following Rob Jones, Shiels sent the corner to the 18 yard line for Stewart to volley home.

Two quick goals from Benji after the break allowed Hibs to coast the majority of the second half and into the next round, a home tie against last seasons finalist Gretna. Credit must be given to Aberdeen for not giving up, the least their fans deserved for travelling through heavy snow on their way south.

A good week then for Hibs and hopefully they can finish it off with another three points against Inverness on Sunday.

UNDERSTANDING OZ (but not Oz Kanka)

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

I had a few titters at a recent letter sent into The Weekly Telegraph by a Mr Munns from Oz. I think he had a point to make and I think he made it very well !!!

QUOTE..... Being a sports fan and an avid follower of British football I often buy The Weekly Telegraph here in Oz. After absorbing the sports stuff in Issue 804, I read Charlotte Francis's Expat World article about not finding a proper carol service in Melbourne.

The trap that Pom visitors and immigrants occasionally fall into is that they have this notion that Australia is `England with sun`. It's not. Australia is a young and vibrant country that has its own culture, language (which we English understand) and customs.

Hopefully Charlotte will try to be a bit more understanding when she writes more articles on Australia ! UNQUOTE.

Yeah, well said mate. The English are infamous for under-estimating people from other countries !!!

On the subject of Oz, it's all happening there now. The Aussie have reclaimed the Ashes in dazzling style, their Rugby League and Union teams are difficult to crack open and let's not forget their impressive footie performance in the recent World Cup in Germany . I wouldn't bet against them being footie World Cup winners in the future !!

We will forget their prowess on the tennis court at the moment. Well....... unless Rod Laver or Ken Rosewall are planning come backs ??!!

C'mon you Aussies. G'day from Eski Kanka Jim

Cavcav signs Beckham for Genclerbirligi!

The Turkish Daily News is not my normal source for football stories in Turkey. First up it is a day late due to the fact that it is printed at around about 6 pm in the evening and therefore can't be as quick as we are here (when we aren't too drunk to actually report).

Secondly, like all Turkish newspapers, it doesn't give a damn about any of the non-Istanbul teams. That wasn't always the case. Until a few years ago a fellow by the name of Keith Dearn, who due to entanglements with the then owner of the paper resigned but crept back onto the sports pages using the name of Michael Severn, did a pretty good job in trying to explain the goings on at other clubs.

Keith died of a heart attack a couple of years ago and as far as I can see there hasn't been a decent article on a non-Istanbul team since.

I'm certainly not going to blame the until very recently sports editor of the paper, Udo Steven Bassey, or Udo Okan Bassey as (I think) he calls himself since taking out Turkish citizenship last year. Udo was used and abused by the TDN for years. Not only was he solely responsible for producing the sports pages but he had to fill all of the foreign news pages as well. The poor fellow never received the wage he deserved.

Udo, however, was and is a Galatasaray fan. Therefore he is evil. As a side note, Udo has just moved to a new English-language paper just started up in the last couple of days called "Today's Zaman" where he appears to be doing the same job he did at the TDN. I hope he is getting better paid.

I went to the launch of the paper in Ankara on Monday night to find a very unjournalistic atmosphere. IE: no free alcohol. I should have known that a paper owned by Fethullah Gülen, launched by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and attended by hundreds of his flunkies (of whom about 0.01 percent were women) wouldn't have speeches in English but surely at the launch of an English-language paper they might have had some free alcohol? Or is that the other way around.

I'm rambling.

My point was that in today's TDN (Wednesday's actually) there was an excellent story which I may have missed in the Turkish papers because normally my eyes glaze over in boredom when I see any story about the Istanbul teams.

The story, The recipe to the perfect transfer story, by Ozgur Korkmaz takes a while to get into but once you get about half way through you realise just how much credibility transfer stories in Turkey have... none.

Unfortunately the online version which I linked to above doesn't have all the photographs as the print edition. Basically though, a reporter for a newspaper (unfortunately not named - for God's sake TDN if Turkish papers are lieing, cheating, being idiots or even telling the truth... name them. How the bloody hell are we supposed to know who to trust and who not to if you are too scared to lay the blame. We name papers here who have stuffed up. Time you lot did too).

Calm down....

Okay the TDN story is bit long-winded but it is the photographic evidence that is great. One shot shows Herman Crespo signing a magazine for a fan, the other shows Crespo signing a Fenerbahce top for a Turkish reporter. Guess which one was Photoshopped?

Having now re-read the story I realise that the Crespo photos are actually six-months old, at least. The main point of the story was the speculation that Hamit Altintop wanted to join Galatasaray was a total and utter beat up. Oh well, the TDN may only be a day late with the news. This blog is six-months late with the news.

If only the transfer of Risp and Ayman from Genclerbirligi to Trabzonspor were just photoshopped.

In the meantime though, well done Ozgur Korkmaz, a nice piece of work.

ANKARAGUCU - TURKISH CUP BUSINESS

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

It is back to Turkish Cup business this weekend and the final matches in the group stage.

I have seen no details in the newspapers yet, but having discussed the subject with Maniac Kanka Harun, he thinks the matches will be played on Sunday at 7pm. I am assuming that both matches will kick off at the same time, ie,

Besiktas v ANKARAGUCU
Rize v Genclerbirligi

I am also assuming that the ANKARGUCU match will be shown live on TV and so Maniac Kanka and I have decided to watch the match at The Cappadokia Bar in Menekse Sokak (near Guven Park). Hope all you Ankara kankas can join us for what should be an exciting match. I think the expression should be........

Winner take all !!!

If there are any changes then I will post them here under the comments section.

Genclerbirligi sell out

Latest transfer news from Genclerbirligi is that Trabzonspor have bought Frederik Risp and Ayman Abdelaziz, two of of our best players.

The Swedish and Egyptian nationals are flying out to Trabzon this evening. No actual report on how much money we are getting but there were reports the other day that the deal would be around 1.9 million euros for the both of them.

The is very bad news (but news which we are used to as Genclerbirligi fans as Cavcav is always looking to make a buck rather than win trophies). Risp started every match this season and is one of the best stoppers in the game. Ayman is a quality player who was a good marshal.

Not looking good for the second half of the season. Let's hope these new Brazillian blokes are good.

ANKARAGUCU IN ANTALYA

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

As most of you know, ANKARAGUCU is in Antalya for a mid-winter break and to play two `friendlies`.

Two days ago (13 January) they played a German 2nd Division side and the result was -

ANKARAGUCU 2 Unterhaching 1

No details of the match to hand except to say that Agali and Ceyhun were the scorers.

ANKARAGUCU played Russian 1st Division side Rubin last night but still waiting for the result.

Looking further ahead, don't forget that next weekend is the last matches in the Turkish Cup Group stage and further details will be given when known.

ANKARAGUCU AND SREBRENKO POSAVEC - THE END OF THE ROAD

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

I spoke too soon about the goings at ANKARAGUCU ! There is one after all.

Srebrenko Posavec, our Croatian player, has had his contract terminated by the Club and is being put up for transfer and will shortly depart from Turkey's FIRST city.

I'm sure Miss Zagreb Kankie will cry herself to sleep tonight when she reads this news, but for us ANKARAGUCU kankas the news has come as no surprise.

Srebrenko has flattered to deceive and has never at any time stamped any much needed authority in the midfield, nor has he been any support in the midfield area for the likes of Ceyhun who invariably had to try and do everything himself.

I have criticised him previously in an early season post about his standard of fitness and I can honestly say that I saw little improvement in this important area in his last few matches for the club.

Sad to say, but in all truth, he will not be missed by ANKARAGUCU.

Aberdeen 2-2 Hibernian

Hibs and Aberdeen will have to fight it out again in the Scottish cup 3rd round match after ending even at two apiece. It was probably a fair result although both teams had chances to win the game.

For Hibs the game ended with Chris Killen damaging his achilies and will take no part in football for the rest of the season. Hibs do not really have someone who can hold the ball up as well as Chris although maybe a slightly different style will be required.

Hibs opened the scoring just before halftime after having to defend for twenty minutes. After passing up a couple of chances to go two up in the second half, Hibs then lost a goal. A great cross from Clark was met by the veteren Craig Brewters head and that was that.

Not to be knocked off their stride Hibs regained the lead through a great goal from Chris Killen. He took a long ball on his chest 10 yards out before spinning and volleying past the keeper.

Hibs looked to be holding on but Aberdeen finally scored in the 88th minute. Again Brewster won a header in the Hibs box, this time knocking down for Nicholson to score.

All set for next Thursday then but this time the battle will be at Easter Road which may give Hibs the edge.

ANKARAGUCU - NEW ARRIVALS IN THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW

Greetings Kankas and Kankies.

Some comings (not goings ..... yet, thankfully !) to report for ANKARAGUCU in the January transfer window.

Sedat Yesilkay. Sedat will need no introduction to our Genclerbirligi kankas. He is a midfield player and has joined ANKARAGUCU on loan till the end of the season. I'm not sure of the circumstances surrounding this loan deal, nor how good a player he is, but I'm sure Oz Kanka can update us further on these two points.

Yasin Celik. Yasin was an ANKARAGUCU player many moons ago (about 4 years) and has joined us from Konyaspor. He is a striker and therefore will be a welcome addition to the squad in an area where we have shown some weaknesses in the first half of the season.

Devran Ayhan. Devran is a midfield player and joins us from Ankaraspor. Prior to that he played with Rizespor.

As I said before, I have no knowledge of their strengths or weaknesses but all three have been brought to the club by Hikmet Karaman (ANKARAGUCU Coach). So, it is reasonable to assume that they are quality players and Hikmet obviously has to be given time to fit them into the squad's system.

I'm sure Hikmet Bey still has ambitions of a successful Cup run and climbing the league into a UEFA Cup qualifying position !

A serious subject for "The round ball in Ankara"?

Newcastle player Emre Belezoglu has been accused and will have to answer charges of racism, according to a BBC report.

Now this is bloody serious. I'm not sure if any other player in England has ever actually been charged with this sort of conduct. I have no idea if Emre is guilty but the way it has been reported in the last week or so it doesn't look good for the former Galatasaray player.

It seems as if three Everton players "reacted furiously", according to the BBC, after Emre said something or other to them during a match on December 30.

The case was referred to the FA and they have decided to charge Emre with "using racially-aggravated abusive and/or insulting words".

As I said, this is bloody serious.

A couple of days ago Emre's agent, Ahmet Bulut, or actually it could have been Emre himself (this blog tries not to check its sources too carefully), came up with probably the most stupid defences I have yet to hear. He (Ahmet or Emre) said something like, "Emre knows English but his English is not good enough to make a racist remark".

Bullshit. Racism and racist remarks are bloody easy to learn.

My point though, and for this I might get some shit, is that in Turkey I don't believe racism is properly understood, and not just not understood but is very clear in some ways. A few years ago Kevin Campbell left Trabzonspor after being called a "yamyam" (cannibal) by his own chairman. Campbell, quite rightly, told Trabzon he would never play for them again. He walked out, never to return. The Trabzon chairman, whose name escapes me at the moment, was amazed at what happened. The English press had a field day saying Trabzon was full of racists.

The Turkish press, being as stupid as they always are, retaliated by saying that Campbell had thrown his toys out of the pram. At no stage was there any debate about how calling a black man a "yamyam" could in any way be racist.

I'm not sure why but Trabzonspor did not try and take Campbell to court for breaching his contract. (for those members of the Turkish press who read this please note this an example of irony - or is it sarcasm ... I never really understood the difference...)

Okay, long story short. Emre has grown up in Turkey. In this country there is no hassle, and certainly no retribution for calling a black person a cannibal. Was Emre just following the Trabzonspor example?

Whatever. We don't yet know all the facts from what happened in the Newcastle - Everton match, and I truly hope that Emre has been totally misunderstood. But if he did make a racist remark then I hope they throw the book at him.

EDIT (very late on Friday night, Saturday morning actually): Actually I reckon I agree with some person who left a comment on the Milliyet website (some 73 comments left there so far). "It is clear and obvious. Emre isn't a racist, just uncultured and uneducated"

Transfer action and inactions

Meaningless friendly tournaments or just plain friendlies being played down in Antalya at the moment and I'm bored stiff. We may be in the winter break at the moment but there is no way that football couldn't be played. I'm sure that as soon as the league starts up again we will actually get some snow and a whole heap of matches will have to be postponed thanks to snow. Then, just like last year, the brains trust at the Turkish Football Federation will reschedule those matches for some work-friendly time such as Wednesday at 2pm, again, just like they did last year.

Oh well. In the meantime I've been trying to follow the transfer news for Genclerbirligi. Let me tell you now that I'm far from totally sure what the hell is going on.

First the definites: Genclerbirligi have signed a couple of lower division players from Brazil. Sandro Da Silva Mezerios and Marien Heverton Da Silva, the latter of which goes by the name Tozo, whatever that means.

The first bloke is a forward who seems to have been getting amongst the goals in the friendlies down in Antalya. Any bets on him replacing Isaac Promise up front? As for the second fellow I'm not all that sure how he is going.

When it comes to who is leaving the club though I think the club, players involved and Trabzonspor have all been inspired by "Should I stay or should I go", a brilliant song by The Clash, whose lead singer Joe Strummer was born in Ankara,

As far as I understand this is the timeline:

Trabzonspor coach Idiot Ziya Dogan (the former Genclerbirligi coach who let Josip Skoko go on a free transfer) announced that he wanted from us Ayman, Risp and Erkan.

Some of the trabzonspor directors didn't like the plans.

Those directors in favour got into talks with Ilhan Cavcav (age 107) to try and sort out the transfers.

Deals arranged and Ayman, who had just six months left on his contract, was on his way to Istanbul for health check-ups. Gencler were to get about 1 million euros from the sale.

Trabzonspor pull out at the last minute. Ayman returns to Antalya to join the rest of the Gencler crew.

Mesut Bakkal, Genclerbirligi's coach, is a very happy man as he was against the sale in the first place. Cavcav (age 207) is probably pissed off as his main priority seems to be to make money, not to see us win the league.

Lanky Kanka Jorg is also very happy as he sees Ayman as a key player.

Now for the complete uncertainty. What is happening with Frederik Risp? Are Trabzonspor going to go for him? They certainly need him.

My hopes are that he will stay. Thinking back over the season so far I reckon he is one of our best players. But knowing Cavcav, any hint of an offer and he will be gone.

Hibernian 0-0 Aberdeen

Hibs passed up a great opportunity to close in on Aberdeen and second place after only drawing with Aberdeen at Easter Road.

Hibs dominated most of the game but a combination of poor finishing and a bad final ball in the last third of the pitch meant Hibs failed to find the net.

Hibs had Ivan Sproule and Dean Shiels back after suspension, Sproule on from the start caused havoc in the Aberdeen defence with his pace but the final ball left a bit to be desired. Shiels replaced Sproule for the last 15 mins and again showed enough to warrant a starting place.

That starting place could be available soon enough with Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson looking like they are heading out to pastures new. Both are loosing favour with the fans as comments, probably prompted by their agent, get up peoples noses. I don't think anyone would grudge them a better wage and a higher standard of league to play in, all people want is a bit of honesty from the players given a chance by clubs like Hibernian.

Anyway Hibs and Aberdeen get to play again next Wednesday in the Scottish Cup. Hopefully we will dominate that game as well and with a bit more inventiveness grab a couple of goals.

Divided loyalties?

I saw a weird story from the Anatolian news agency today concerning Ankaragucu chairman Cemal Aydin.

Cast your minds back a few weeks ago to the Ankaragucu - Fenerbahce match which was played in Izmir, due to crowd incidents at an Ankaragucu away match to Sakarya, in which apparently some sort of fight broke out in the protocol section.

I have no idea what actually happened, the press reports were extremely vague but it appears that the Fenerbahce discipline board is going to have a look at the matter.

My first thought was "how on earth will an internal discipline board look at the actions of an opposition chairman?"

Logical obviously, but as we all know Turkish football is not the most logical sport in the world. It all became clear however when the article pointed out that Aydin is actually a member of Fenerbahce!

The Fenerbahce discipline board is going to look at the events in Izmir and also at subsequent statements made by Aydin, in which he has launched full-on attacks on the Fener chairman.

Genclerbirligi may have the former leader of a Galatasaray supporters club on its board but at least the chairman isn't a member of another club. Although it wouldn't surprise me if it turns out he is.

Hibernian 2-0 Dunfermline

Another good three points for Hibs which, after other results went in their favour, closes the gap on second placed Aberdeen.
This game was not a classic and it took Hibs until the second half to really find their stride. Fortunately Dunfermline did not look like much of a threat and it is easy to understand why they are struggling this season.

Two second half goals from Chris Killen won the game for Hibs but I had the feeling that at any time Hibs could have upped the tempo and scored more goals. Probably the fact we Play Aberdeen on the second of January meant the players were conserving some energy.

For once Hibs managed to get through the game with eleven players still on the park, maybe John Collins is managing to instill a bit more discipline.

The main talking point before the game was that Zibi the Hibs goalkeeper (who tends to save his howlers for the derby matches) was dropped, not even making the bench. In his place was Andy McNeil who also plays for the Scotland under 19s. Andy did not have a lot to do but everything he did do was fine. A tougher test on Tuesday no doubt.

Happy New Year
